Last week I started running again. Yeah, running.
I pulled the plug on my gym membership. Decided to save the money. Decided I’d rather be outdoors - fresh air and all that. Decided I’d simplify my life. Because to use a gym you have to go to the gym. And half the battle when it comes to doing anything in life is showing up.
Running is simple. All you need is a good pair of shoes. All you need to do is walk out your front door with those shoes on and — begin.
I’ve been using the Nike Run App (highly recommend) and tracking my progress. I’m three runs in so far, running every other day. My first run was terrible. The next two, progressively easier/better. Already I’m faster and stronger.
Coach Bennett in the Nike Run App says, Let the run come to you.
I like that.
This idea reminds me of another idea I like — Easy does it.
When people say “easy does it” it can sound more like “calm down”. But the real idea behind the saying? Do the thing you’re doing but do it slower, more carefully, don’t rush it, don’t force it. Let it come.
I’m thinking about this as I’m getting back into running. And I’m thinking about this as I’m transitioning to a new studio space.
My instinct is to go at it, full force. But I’m not going to force it.
I’m going to put on the shoes, let the run happen.
Go to the studio, let the art happen.
Let myself be at the mercy of the materials and just — watch.
Be proud that I showed up.
Be okay with what happens next.
Let it come.
