I dreamt I made curtains last night. Or, fabric things to hang in front of light. They were made up of small squares in lines that went up and down. Like snakes. Like musical notes.
Recently I was asked in an interview what I am known for. My mind went to what I produce, which we all know is a trap. What I hope to be known for? Experimenting. Trying new things. A love of the creative process.
And, hopefully, giving other people the permission to try new things, too. (If they need permission - a lot of us do.)
People say it’s embarrassing to be bad at things. I never got that memo. Being bad at a thing is just a part of becoming good at it. It’s fun to be bad because there’s somewhere to go. When you’re good, or great even, when you’ve learned “all there is to know”? How boring.
Anyway there’s always something to learn, isn’t there? Even when we’re good. If we’re honest, there’s always something we’re bad at. Something that needs working, practice, etc.. This is true in art and in life. Which is why you should just try the thing and learn to love the process of learning.
Lately, I’ve been working on fabric collages. Back in the day, I used to sew (purses, aprons), so this is a return to self in some ways. I’m remembering that I really enjoy working with fabric.
Here’s one in progress I’m calling “Something Like a Rainbow”.
I’m working on a large mixed media piece, too, but not ready to show it. Maybe soon? Until then…

Joce
